Wantage is a fair stretch from our Fairford workshop, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is around 20 miles, near enough 32 minutes once you string together the A417 and the A338. That puts it a bit beyond our usual run of towns, but the trip is an easy one, and for a tidy, honest repair a good few drivers from this side of the Vale make the journey.
A market town with plenty going on
Wantage has real history to it. The King Alfred the Great statue stands in the Market Place, marking the spot as the birthplace of the man himself, and the Vale and Downland Museum keeps the rest of the story going. None of that stops the cars getting knocked about. Market days fill the car parks, the lanes through town are tight, and a clipped bumper or a scraped wing turns up the same here as anywhere.
Out at Grove, the place is changing fast. The new housing estates keep spreading, Williams Racing has its Formula 1 headquarters right on the edge of the village, and the extra traffic that brings means more of the everyday dinks and scuffs.
